Spooling a baitcaster takes a few minutes and comes down to four moves: run the line through the levelwind, anchor it to the spool arbor with a loop knot, wind it on under tension, and stop short of the lip. Then there is a fifth move that most guides leave out, and it is the one that decides whether the reel still casts the way it did before you touched it. After a spool change the number on the brake dial no longer matches what the brake is doing inside, so the dial has to be re-set on purpose rather than trusted.
Skip that fifth step and the first hour of your next session goes into a backlash that has nothing to do with your thumb. What follows is the sequence in order, plus what goes wrong at each stage and how to tell which failure you are looking at.
There are two common ways to put line on a baitcaster spool, and they do not fail the same way.
The first wraps the line around the spool arbor. Run the tag end around the hub, bring it back over the standing line, and pass it through the loop you just formed -- twice. Wet the knot and pull it down snug against the arbor. Two wraps is enough; more than that and the knot stacks into a bump that shows up as an uneven first layer.
The second threads the tag end through one of the small holes drilled in the spool face and knots it on the far side. It looks neater, and it is the one that lets go. Those holes are punched through a thin wall and the edge is sharp. A knot sitting against that edge gets cut rather than untied, and it cuts loose under load -- usually on a fish, not in the yard. If your spool has holes but no arbor to wrap, wrap the arbor anyway. The holes are there for weight, not for anchoring.
Whichever you tie, check it again after the first layer is down. A knot that felt snug on an empty spool can loosen once line starts pressing against it from above.
Line goes onto a baitcaster spool under tension or it goes on wrong. Slack winds sit on top of each other instead of bedding in, and the first time something pulls hard, the outer layer cuts down into the loose ones underneath and locks the spool.
Pinch the line between your thumb and forefinger a little above the levelwind and wind steadily. You are not trying to stretch the line -- just to keep each turn from riding on top of the one below it. A second pair of hands makes this easier: have them hold the line spool on a pencil and feed it straight in. Winding alone, a spool on the floor with the line running up through a thick book gives you a light, steady drag.
Set the reel's drag tight before you start winding. This is the step that comes back later. Winding on with a loose drag puts the line down under a tension the reel does not repeat during a cast, and the mismatch shows up as a backlash on the first real throw.
Keep the bottom layer tighter than the rest. Everything above presses down on it, and a loose base compresses under the weight of the line stacked on top -- once it compresses, the whole stack shifts and the outer wraps loosen.
Set the star drag before the line goes on, and set it by feel rather than by a number: tighten it until a straight hand pull cannot turn the spool, then back it off until the spool just gives -- eight or nine tenths of the way tight is the working range. Wind the first few tens of metres on at that setting, because that base is what every layer above it presses down on. On a mid-size baitcaster, a 100 m spool of 1.5 or 2 PE fills the reel close to the lip, so there is no spare line to re-do a bad base with.
Backing is the layer of cheap line under the line you actually fish. It earns its place in one situation that has nothing to do with casting: a deep spool you cannot fill with the line you actually use. Braid is the expensive part of a setup, and a deep spool swallows far more of it than you will ever cast. A base of cheap mono takes up the depth so the working line sits in the outer part of the spool, which is where it casts from.
The other reason people give for backing -- slick line spinning on a bare arbor -- is real, and it is why a mono base goes under braid even on a shallow spool.
If your spool is shallow and you are filling it with mono, skip the backing. There is nothing for it to do.
What goes underneath is usually cheaper line, and 12 to 15 lb nylon is the class beginners get pointed at for exactly that reason -- it is the line you can afford to waste, and a backlash on it costs a spool of line rather than a season. If you are still learning the cast, the same logic runs further: fill to about a tenth of the spool and practise on that, then step up to 20 m, then to 40 m, then fill it.
The failure that fills these threads starts with a full spool and ends with 30 m coming off. A Black Max wound with a 100 m spool goes on to what looks like a full spool, and the complaint that follows is always the same: line sitting above the lip, and a backlash on the first cast. Add the line variable and it gets worse -- the same reports come from 0.8 PE, which is thin enough to dig into its own layers. The first fix people try is to change the line, nylon off and PE on, and it does nothing, because the line was not the problem. The fix that keeps coming up is to take 30 m off, which is roughly what it takes to drop a full spool back to the level the reel wants. And the class that gets recommended for the retry is specific: 1.5 or 2 PE, four-carrier while you are learning and eight-carrier once the cast is reliable.
On fill depth, the working rule is just below the spool lip -- a band of bare spool still visible, and never a coil riding above it. That is the level the reel was built to cast from, and it is the level to aim for every time you top the spool up.
This is the step missing from almost every spooling guide, and it is why a reel that cast cleanly before you respooled it backlashes on the first throw.
The number on the brake dial is a position, not a setting. It points at a magnet position or a count of engaged weights, and the braking force that position produces depends on the spool it is acting on. Pull the spool, wind line onto it, put it back, and the dial can end up reading a number that no longer corresponds to the brake force it produced a session ago. The dial and the actual brake state drift apart during a spool change.
The drift is not theoretical. Open the side plate on a reel you have just spooled and the dial will often sit somewhere other than where you left it -- the position and the number printed beside it have come apart. So read the dial before you trust it, and set it from there. On a magnetic brake the working range starts high and drops as the cast settles: a 7 or an 8 on a ten-position dial while you are learning, 4 or 5 once it is clean, back up to 6 if it starts to fluff, and only down to 1 or 2 once your thumb is doing the work. The position is reel-specific as well as lure-specific: a 4 that one angler found clean on his own DC-brake reel is not a number to carry onto the next one.
The fix takes a minute. With the spool back in and the side plate closed, open the side plate again and look at where the dial actually sits, then set it deliberately instead of trusting the number you left it on. Then run the fall test before you fish: hold the rod out horizontally, press the thumb bar, and let the lure fall. It should descend at a slow, steady rate -- not free-falling, not stalling. Adjust from there.
Braid, mono, and fluorocarbon do not spool the same way, and the difference matters more than the label on the box suggests.
Braid. Thin for its strength, so a spool holds a lot of it, and slick, so a loose wind slides instead of sitting still. Under load it cuts into its own layers rather than riding on them. That combination turns a loose bottom layer into a dig-in the first time you hook something with weight behind it.
Fluorocarbon. Stiffer, with more memory. It winds on with fewer surprises but wants more tension to lay flat, and it is the most expensive of the three to waste on a bad spool job.
Mono. The most forgiving to wind and the cheapest to learn on. It also stretches the most, and it takes a set if it sits on the spool through a season.
Whatever you choose, the tension rule does not change, and the line class should follow the rod's rated lure weight rather than the capacity printed on the reel.
Respooling a baitcaster is a different job from spooling one, and the difference is what you do with the line already on the spool.
You can top up a spool that has lost line to cut-offs and backlashes. Wind the new line on over the old, under the same tension, and keep the joint out of the casting zone. Splice the two ends and wind the splice down under several layers of new line, or the knot catches the levelwind on the way out and takes your cast with it.
Strip it and start over when the line itself is the problem: a spool that has spent a season in the sun, line with visible flat spots or fuzz, or a bottom layer that has already compressed and dug in. New line wound on top of a compressed base reproduces the same failure on the first cast.
There is one more reason to strip a spool that has nothing to do with wear. Line takes a set -- it remembers the coil it sat in for months. A spool that has been wound since spring casts differently from a fresh one, and if a reel that used to cast cleanly has gone stiff, the line is a cheaper suspect than the reel.
Line that stacks to one side of the spool instead of spreading evenly is a spooling fault, not a casting fault, and it shows up as tangles on one side of the cast.
The usual cause is how the line was fed while winding. Winding alone -- rod in one hand, line pinched in the other -- means feeding at an angle that drifts as you work, and the line piles up wherever your hand drifted. Have someone hold the line spool and feed it straight into the levelwind, and the pile-up mostly stops.
Uneven line lay has a second cost beyond the tangles. A spool that is fatter on one side than the other changes how the line leaves the reel, and the spool's own rotation picks up a wobble it did not have when the line was level.
Put it in sequence: run the line through the levelwind, anchor it to the arbor with a loop knot around the hub, wind it on under tension with the drag set tight and the base layer tighter still, fill to just below the spool lip, and then re-set the brake on purpose before the first cast.
